June was a month filled with celebration, reflection, and communities coming together. As we move into July, let’s take a moment and look back on some of our favorite highlights of June!
Juneteenth Flag-Raising Ceremony
Our partners at the Delaware Juneteenth Association (DEJA) started the month off with a Juneteenth flag-raising ceremony at the Route 9 Library & Innovation Center, which provided an opportunity for community members to reflect on the importance of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth Freedom Festival
The Mitchell Center was also at the Delaware Juneteenth Association’s Juneteenth Freedom Festival at the Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park! We would like to thank DEJA for allowing the Mitchell Center to sponsor the performance of the Universal African Drum & Dance ensemble at the festival.
The Mitchell Center had an outreach and engagement table that featured craft making, facilitated by a teaching artist from the Christina Cultural Arts Center and educational resources. The crafting station allowed festivalgoers to create a cartouche necklace using Adinkra symbols, which can express proverbial meaning, human behavior, animal behavior, plant life, and shapes of objects. The educational resources that Mitchell Center distributed at the festival can be found at dehistory.org.
